Celebrate Healthy Foods on Food Day, October 24

On October 24, communities across the nation will mobilize to promote healthier diets and improved food policies. In thousands of events sponsored by schools, community groups, healthcare systems and other organizations, Americans will celebrate Food Day, an inaugural event that “seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life—parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes—to push for healthy, affordable food.”

The Food Day campaign, which is sponsored by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and co-chaired by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), asks individuals and organizations from across the country to plan events focused on promoting healthy, sustainable foods.

Colorado Food Day Events

In support of this national initiative, Governor John Hickenlooper has formally proclaimed October 24 Food Day in Colorado.

Several Colorado organizations, including The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Urban Gardens, Denver Sustainable Food Policy Council, and the Department of Health and Human Services, have partnered to host a marquee Food Day event at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on October 24, will focus on:

  • Reducing obesity and diet-related diseases by promoting safe, healthy foods
  • Supporting local agriculture and sustainable farming
  • Expanding access to food and alleviating hunger

The event will offer a variety of educational experiences in four session “tracks” throughout the day for both children and adults.

  1. Local & Home Food Production: This track will feature a lecture and panel discussion on “Why Food Policy Matters” and a hands-on canning and fermentation demonstration.
  2. Nutrition: This track will feature a lecture and panel discussion on “Healthy Cooking on a Budget”, a presentation about School Food, and a “Healthy Snacks for Kids” cooking demonstration.
  3. Growing Food: This track will be a lunchtime lecture entitled “Get in Touch with Your Food Source” and will feature CSAs, NSAs, and Farmer’s Market representatives.
  4. Food Access and Security: This track will feature a lecture and panel discussion on “Food Access Action” and a film screening of “The Power of Community”.

A number of LiveWell Colorado Communities, schools and community groups will also host events to promote and celebrate healthy foods. A complete list of Colorado Food Day events is available on the Food Day website.
