Join us on Saturday, May 2, 2009 for the 2nd Annual Successful Child Conference.  The event will take place at the Summit Middle School from 9 am-4 pm.  We are very excited to have keynote speaker Peter Mangione, Co-Director of the WestEd’s Center for Child Care & Families Studies.  His keynote address will be “Talking Just for the Fun of It”–Social-emotional foundations for school readiness:  Facilitating language development and communication of young children.  There will also be many workshops designed for Summit County parents and teachers throughout the day.  If you would like to be a workshop presenter or vender, please contact Johanna Kugler at 970-513-1170 x313.

Keynote Speaker

Peter L. Mangione

Peter L. Mangione is a Co-Director of WestEd’s Center for Child and Family Studies.  He has worked extensively in the fields of child development, early childhood education, research and evaluation design, and public policy.  For over twenty years, he has provided leadership in the development of the Program for Infant/Toddler Care, a national model for training early childhood practitioners. Mangione was also one of the Executive Producers of the video “A World Full of Language: Supporting Preschool English Learners.” Recently, he has been leading the development of preschool learning foundations and infant/toddler learning and development foundations for the California Department of Education. Mangione received his Ph.D. in Education and Human Development from the University of Rochester in 1980 and completed postdoctoral study at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich, Germany.

 

  • 9:00 am - 10:15 am Peter will be doing a workshop called “The Heart of Quality”   –Relationship- based early care and education
  • 10:30 am - noon Peter’s Keynote is called “Talking Just for the Fun of It”   –Social-emotional foundations for school readiness:  Facilitating language development and communication of young children.   I will give examples in my presentation mostly focused on infants, toddlers and preschoolers.  I will touch on how the overall framework relates to the birth to 8 years, and cite a couple of studies that pertain to the early elementary years.  Also, I will address how to support children who are dual language learners and touch on the importance of communication with social-emotional development.

A Note on Workshops:  Every effort will be made to accommodate participants wishing to attend each workshop.  However, seating is limited and workshops will be crowded or full.  Seating for all workshops is on a first-come first-served basis.

-The Benefits of Pre and Postpartum Fitness presented by Amy Hume and Corrie Burr

          This is a Baby Boot Camp with a prenatal fitness class and postpartum stroller fitness class.  The class will provide a comprehensive range of fitness programming to meet your individual fitness needs and is designed to enable our pregnant or newly postpartum moms and conditioned or athletic moms to exercise with their baby.  (Please do not bring your baby to this workshop.  Dolls will be used for active participation.)  Pt

- Love and Logic presented by Joe Johnson

          Many locals are familiar with the work of Foster Cline, Jim Fay and Charles Fay.  This workshop will give attendees some hands-on love and logic tools that they can use today with toddlers through teenagers.  Examples are the C.O.O.L. formula, making deposits (relationship building), fighting vs. thinking words, and turning your words into gold by using enforceable statements.  Pt, Pro, Ft

-The Heart of Quality presented by Peter Mangione

          This is a workshop about building quality relationship based early care and education.  Discussion will focus mostly on infant and toddler care while touching on how the perspective applies to preschool-age children. Pt, Pro

-Brain Building Basics with Early Literacy presented by T.J. Dufresne, M.S.

          Children begin life ready to communicate.  Communication sets the stage for building early literacy skills - and it’s not just about books.  It’s how communication is delivered, what’s delivered, and how it’s applied.  You will learn about the brain and simple things you can do to make the most of those little brains.  Pt, Pro

-Pyramid Training: Infants and Toddlers presented by Kristy Johnson

          The Teaching Pyramid is designed to guide practitioners in understanding the importance of children’s social emotional competence in terms of school readiness and the prevention of challenging behavior.  This workshop will be looking at the model for infants and toddlers.  Pro

-Field of Dads: Creating a Father-Friendly Environment presented by Doug Gertner, Ph.D.

         This session will address the questions “Where are all the dads? and How can we create programs and places that will attract fathers?”  The session will begin with a history of fatherhood, explores expectations and “hot- buttons”, and concludes with ways to create a more father-friendly environment in an early education setting.  Pr, Ft

- Science: Nature Learning Experiences and Crafts presented by Dr. Beverly Hall

          This workshop will explore connecting our science learning about plants, animals, universe, insects and people to where we live through art, music, drawing/painting, crafts, literature, and science experiences.  Indoor learning complements outdoor learning.   Pt, Pro

- When Your Child Gets Sick: A Mother’s Strategy- How to Survive a Crisis, Chronic or Acute presented by Julie Burns, RN

          As a mother who has helped her young child through the journey of surviving Leukemia and the hospitalizations and chemotherapy that went along with it, Burns has found that there is a healthy and beneficial way to live during these hard times when tragedy strikes.  This presentation will be a discussion on how to cope with a sudden health crisis in a child, both acute and chronic, and how to survive the process intact as a family.  From her experiences she will share tips on making every family member feel useful and empowered.  Pt, Pro

-Childhood Allergies: A New American Epidemic.  How Allergies May Be Affecting Your Child’s Health, Focus and Well-being presented by Dr. Kim Nearpass, Naturopathic doctor

          This talk will explore the potential causes of allergies, asthma, autism, ADHD. obesity and diabetes.  In addition, Dr. Nearpass will provide parents with suggestions that can be easily implemented into daily practice for a healthy and disease-free lifestyle.  She will discuss testing and a wide range of therapies that can be used to help improve your child’s health if they suffer from any of these modern illnesses.  Pt

-Careful, Careless and Caring Relationships: What are You Creating with Your Child? presented by Jolina Karen

          In this presentation you will learn the characteristics of the three different types of relationships; how and why relationships are created; how relationships affect a child’s self-image, cognitive abilities and confidence to act in the world; and how to optimize relationships in order to really promote a child’s success.  Pt, Pro, Ft

- Practical Parenting Workshop presented by George Hoherd

          No one said it would be easy.  Everyone says it’s important- raising good kids.  No matter where you are as a parent, this workshop gives you the skills you need to do the most important job in the world.  “Every kid needs at least one adult who is crazy about him or her!”  Pt, Ft

-The Healing Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu: Promoting Health for Families presented by Linda Wallace

          Jin Shin Jyutsu is a simple, practical and profound Japanese healing art.  Based on our innate ability to harmonize ourselves, Jin Shin Jyutsu teaches us how to use specific hand-on sequences to help restore emotional equilibrium, relieve pain, and release built up stress.  When you leave this session you will have simple, practical tools to help yourself and your children.  Pt, Pro, Ft
