Tobacco Survey

We have just launched our tobacco survey!  As you may know, we are working to protect youth, keep tobacco out of their hands, and prevent kids from beginning a deadly habit.  The purpose of the survey is to get the opinions of the community about how they would like to see a tobacco licensing ordinance implemented.  Licensing of tobacco retailers is a proven method of reducing the number of tobacco sales to underage youth.  We are asking community members to please take a few minutes to complete the following survey.

Thank you!

Tiger Trot!

Today is the Tiger Trot at SMS!  Working with our This Is Us Tigers group, we designed some really exciting T-shirts to give to the entire school to wear.  We even used one students drawing as the logo on the back!  Yesterday, we met with our group and let them get creative with their shirts and really add some flair.  Everyone will know the This Is Us kids when they see them!  We also designed some “I Kick Butts” stickers for the students, to remind them to stay tobacco-free.  SPA is really looking forward to the race today!

Coming close to the end of a great school year

This Monday is our last This Is Us meeting with our high school students. May 23rd will be the last This Is Us Tigers meeting with our middle school students. We are so pleased with the way things worked out with these committees this school year. We were able to accomplish many successes. Please stay tuned to this summer’s activities planned for these committees.

Tobacco Meeting Recap and Survey

Thanks to everyone that attended yesterday’s tobacco coalition meeting.  We had a great turnout, especially from Summit County’s youth.  We discussed potential messaging and recieved some great feedback.  We also had three 5th graders from Summit Cove present their tobacco and cancer project.  Overall, it was a very productive meeting and I hope everyone is as energized as I am!  I encourage everyone to take a quick survey at https://summitpreventionalliance.wufoo.com/forms/youth-ordinance-survey/.  The survey is designed to get the community’s input on what a licensing ordinance in Summit County would look like.  Thanks!

We are getting the green houses ready!

It’s that time of year again..where we wonder…is the snow ever going to melt?  Will we ever see the sun again?  Will the soil defrost in time to plant?  This Saturday May 21st we are putting up the plastic and planting soon after!  We can use all the help we can get for the “plastic endeavor” so…if you are available from 7:30a-1p-ish on Saturday May 21st come on down to Nancy’s Community Garden, next to the Senior and Community Center in Frisco, we’d love to have you and will provide breakfast, snacks and lunch!  We have also hired a farmer team!  Mike and his wife Amy have graciously agreed to take on the task of growing this summer!  This year we are planting organic mixed lettuce greens, culinary herbs and a variety of beans, peas and zucchini.  We can’t wait to show off our produce and will be selling to the community starting the 2nd week in June.  So that being said…with dreams of frisee, mint and basil in my head I’m signing off and will check back in soon with updates!  Stay tuned for produce updates!

Introduction to Erica Hughes, Well Workplace Network Contact

Hello, I would like to introduce myself for those of you who do not know me. My name is Erica Hughes and for the past 4 years I have been coordinating wellness events for St. Anthony Summit Medical Center (SASMC) and the community. My passion is worksite wellness. I feel that all worksites should promote healthy behaviors. We spend more time at work than we do sleeping or even with our spouses. My goal from this blog would be to help employers and employees of Summit County promote a healthier lifestyle at work. I will use my expertise to help organize events that you can go to and help you promote healthy activities in your workplace. Please feel free to comment and ask any questions or suggest areas you would like me to research for you! I can not wait to make our worksites healthier!

Tobacco or Candy?

I’ve been heavily involved in the world of tobacco for several months now–I’ve done the research and seen all the pictures about how tobacco products are designed to entice kids.  Even that didn’t prepare me for my amazement and shock when I actually starting touching and smelling these products.

After getting over my fear of being seen buying tobacco, I’ve spent part of the last week visiting stores and purchasing examples of how tobacco is looking, tasting, and smelling more and more like candy.  The hot pink wrappings, the tic-tac like “orbs”, the grape and strawberry flavors, and the Altoid looking package design.  Heck, I know how bad these products are for you and how they are specifically designed to lure people in, but even I wanted to try some!  Some of the products I purchased don’t even have any kind of labeling indicating that a deadly and addictive product is inside–just a cute picture of an owl, the flavor, and some neon wrappings.  Who wouldn’t be tricked? And speaking of misleading advertising, at one convenience store I saw a sign advertising cigarettes saying “100% addictvie free natural tobacco”.  Talk about misleading.

Perhaps just as shocking, under Colorado law, clerks are required to check the IDs of anyone who looks like they are under the 30.  As reluctant as I am to admit it, I’m 27 and like to flatter myself that I look pretty close to my age, if not a smidge younger.  Not once while buying these products was I carded.  In one store which shall remain nameless, the clerk even let me behind the counter where the tobacco was kept to look for what I wanted.

On May 10th from 3:30-5 in the County Commons, I’m having a meeting to discuss this and the steps we are taking to keep tobacco out of the hands of our youth in Summit County.  I invite everyone to attend.  I’m also planning to bring these kid-friendly tobacco products I purchased so everyone can see for themselves how serious this problem is.

Tobacco Licensure Program

The tobacco licensure program is really getting geared up and rolling.  We had several meetings this past week with our legal and financial teams.  Everyone is really excited, optimistic, and can’t wait to hit the ground running!   We are getting a lot of awesome feedback and many great ideas came out of the meetings.  We are hoping to keep the momentum going during our meetings with the communications team in the coming days.

If you are interested in joining our efforts, we will have a coalition meeting on May 10th from 3:30-5 at the County Commons.  All are welcome!

Thanks Chipotle

On behalf of Summit Prevention Alliance & BodyWorks participants, I want to thank Chipotle for their generous contribution to the program. They donated dinner for 12 families for 10 sessions! This was huge and very much appreciated. It was an incentive to have famlies there at 5:30pm without having to worry about dinner. Michael, Aaron and the entire Silverthorne Chipotle Team were awesome! They would have all the food ready for us by 5pm and every week it was a different meal! They did a salsa demonstration as well as invite us for a tour of their restaurant, how fascianting. They also came and talked to our group about Food With Integrity and how it is all related to animals, people and the environement. For more information please visit their website on http://www.chipotle.com

Please support Chipotle by having lunch or dinner there, they do such a great job in supporting nonprofits.
