Board of Health Resolution

So after a month of anxious waiting (for me at least) the Colorado Board of Health unanimously passed a resolution regarding dissolvable tobacco.  The board’s resolution included several points:

  • The Colorado Board of Health objects to using Colorado as a test market
  • The Colorado Board of Health requests RJ Reynolds remove Camel Sticks, Strips, and Orbs from Colorado until the FDA has regulated these products
  • The Colorado Board of Health petitions and requests the FDA regulate these products
  • Parents, public, youth, family members, school officials and others become educated about the ability and potential dangers of these products
  • The Colorado General Assembly investigate and consider imposing a tobacco excise tax on these products
  • Finally, that RJ Reynolds stop marketing dissolvable tobacco in any way that may potentially attract youth to the products.

While this in nonbinding, it is certainly taking a step in the right direction.  Thus far, (and not surprisingly), RJ Reynolds has refused to remove these products from Colorado.  However, I’m encouraged–the more people know and the more it’s discussed, the better.  To view the resolution in its entirety,  please visit http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/op/bh/BoHresolutionADOPTED9212011.pdf.

International Walk & Ride Bikes to School day October 5, 2011

Thursday October 5th the world is participating in Safe Walk & Ride to school day.  Many Summit County Schools will host events to encourage young people to walk and ride their bikes to school.  We hope you get out with your kids and encourage the community to focus on safety for our kids.

Some reasons kids should bike & walk to school, and  a great reason for parents to encourage it:

A typical student who bicycles or walks to school receives this amount of savings and benefits:

  • Bicycling: $2749 per year ($1129 in cost savings and health benefits; $1620 in enjoyment benefit)
  • Walking: $1856 per year ($596 in cost savings and health benefits; $1260 in enjoyment benefit)

Additionally, the camp learned about sustainable foods and planted green beans.
